What we fix

The three jobs we get called for most

Holes and dents

Doorknob holes, furniture damage, and the cut-outs left behind after a plumber or electrician has been in the wall.

Water damage

Stained, soft or sagging ceiling board after a roof, plumbing or A/C condensation leak — common here in storm season.

Cracks and nail pops

Seam cracks above doors and windows, corner bead splits, and rows of popped screws as a house settles.

How it works

Three steps, no surprises

1

Tell us what happened

A couple of sentences and a photo are enough. The photo is what lets us bring the right board, compound and texture tools on the first visit.

2

We cut back to something solid

Damaged board comes out to firm edges and solid framing. Patching over soft or wet board is why repairs come back.

3

Tape, compound, texture, done

Seams are taped and compounded in coats, sanded flat, then the texture is matched to the rest of the wall so the repair disappears.

Local context

Why drywall fails in Charleston

Two things drive most of the drywall work we do around Charleston: humidity and movement. Coastal air keeps indoor humidity high for months at a time, and drywall that stays damp goes soft at the seams long before anyone notices a stain. Add a storm season that finds every tired roof flashing and A/C condensate line, and ceiling patches become the single most common call we get.

Movement is the other half. Houses here settle on sandy, wet soil, and that shows up as hairline cracks running diagonally from the corners of doors and windows, and as rows of nail pops down a hallway. Those are cosmetic far more often than they are structural — but filling them without re-securing the board just means they come back next season.

Downtown adds a third case entirely. Historic houses have plaster over wood lath, not sheetrock. It cracks differently, it crumbles when handled badly, and cutting it out to replace it with modern board is what flattens the character of an old room. We repair plaster as plaster.

Drywall repair FAQ

How soon can you repair drywall in Charleston?

Tell us the size of the damage when you book and we will give you the soonest slot we can genuinely keep. Small patches are usually a single visit; larger repairs need a second visit because joint compound has to dry fully before sanding and painting.

Will the patch be invisible once it is painted?

That depends on the texture. A smooth wall patches almost invisibly. Knockdown, orange peel and other sprayed textures have to be matched by hand, and on an older wall the surrounding paint has usually faded, so a full-wall repaint gives the cleanest result. We will tell you which case yours is before we start.

Do you handle water-damaged ceilings in Charleston?

Yes. The important part is that the leak is fixed first — patching over an active leak wastes your money. We cut out the soft board back to solid framing, check that the area is dry, and replace it. If we see anything that looks like a mould problem beyond surface staining, we will say so rather than close the wall over it.

Do you paint after the repair?

We can prime and paint the repaired area if you have the paint, or repaint the whole wall for an even finish. Add it in the description when you book so we bring what we need in one trip.

What about the old plaster walls downtown?

Plaster over wood lath behaves nothing like modern drywall — it cracks along the lath lines and crumbles if you screw into it carelessly. We repair plaster with the right bonding materials instead of simply cutting it out and replacing it with sheetrock, which is what usually ruins the look of a historic room.
