Simple & stress-free
How it works
Open it up to solid material
The ragged hole is cut back into a clean square or rectangle, removing any crumbled or water-softened drywall until only sound board remains.
Add backing and set the patch
Where there's no stud behind the opening, we screw in furring strips or a backing board so the new drywall section has something solid to attach to.
Tape, coat, and blend
Every seam is taped and built up in thin compound coats, sanded between each one, then textured and primed so the repair reads as part of the wall.
We can help
Problems we fix
- A hole too wide for a store-bought mesh patch to span without sagging or cracking
- Damage that goes all the way through with no stud nearby to anchor a patch
- Old repairs stacked on top of each other that have started failing again
- Crumbling plaster around the edges of a large hole in an older, downtown home
- A hole that lands on or near an existing seam, complicating a clean texture match

Large Drywall Hole Patch in Charleston — FAQ
Why can't I just use a big patch kit from the hardware store?
Self-adhesive mesh patches are made for small holes. Once damage gets past a few inches across, the patch has nothing solid to hold onto and will sag or crack — a larger hole needs backing and a proper cut-in piece of drywall.
Will you need to cut the hole bigger before fixing it?
Usually, yes. Squaring the opening up to reach solid framing or clean edges gives the new patch something firm to attach to, which is what makes the repair last.
Is this a one-visit job?
It depends on the size. Compound needs to dry fully between coats, so a larger patch often needs the material to cure before it's sanded and finished, which can mean more than one visit.
My house is an older downtown home with plaster walls — does that change anything?
Yes. Plaster over wood lath cracks and crumbles differently than drywall, and a large opening in it needs different repair materials. We treat plaster as plaster instead of just swapping in sheetrock.
Local context
Large Drywall Hole Patch across Charleston
Charleston's humid subtropical climate, salt air and active storm season are tough on homes — swollen doors, rusting hardware, mildew-prone caulk and storm-loosened trim are all common. Downtown's historic houses add original plaster walls and tight, detailed millwork, while West Ashley and the islands bring newer builds with their own quirks. Our pros are comfortable with both.
