What’s included
- Probe and identify the full extent of rot damage
- Cut out all soft or discolored wood beyond the obvious patch
- Apply borate preservative or epoxy consolidant to the substrate
- Splice in pressure-treated or rot-resistant replacement lumber
- Caulk and prep new material for paint
How it works
Find the full damage
We probe with an awl to map how far the rot has spread — it almost always goes further than it looks from the surface.
Remove and treat
We cut past the rot into solid wood, treat exposed surfaces with a borate solution or epoxy consolidant, and let it dry before patching.
Fill, splice, and finish
We fit solid replacement material, prime the repair, and caulk all joints so moisture can't get back in.
Problems we fix
- Soft spots on window sills and exterior trim that look like peeling paint but are actually rot underneath
- Fascia board rot that starts at a gutter joint where water sits
- Siding butt ends that rot because they weren't caulked properly
- Rot discovered during painting that's much deeper than expected
Wood Rot Repair — FAQ
How do you know if rot has spread to the framing?
We probe around the repair area with an awl or screwdriver. If the framing lumber is soft, we'll open up more material to assess — better to find it now than have it fail later.
Can you use wood filler instead of replacing the wood?
For small surface defects on solid wood, two-part epoxy filler works well and won't rot again. For structural or deeply compromised pieces, replacement is always the right answer.
Will the repair match my existing wood?
New lumber won't match weathered wood right away, but once primed and painted it blends in well. We match dimensions as closely as possible.
Does fixing rot also stop it from coming back?
Rot needs moisture to grow. We treat the area and caulk joints, but the root cause — whether it's a failed caulk line, missing flashing, or clogged gutter — needs to be addressed to keep it from returning.
