ProfessionalSmooth Wall Refinishing

Popcorn, knockdown, and orange peel were the default finishes for decades, but a lot of homeowners now want the flat, smooth look of a newer build or a renovated space. Getting there means either scraping off the old texture or skim coating over it, then building the surface up in level coats until it's flat enough to hold a smooth painted finish without every joint and roller mark showing through.

What you get

What’s included

  • Assessment of the existing texture and the best method to remove or cover it
  • Scraping or wet removal of loose texture where that's the practical approach
  • Multiple wide, thin coats of joint compound built up and sanded flat between each one
  • Extra attention at seams, corners, and light switches, where texture removal often reveals old flaws
  • A final sanding pass under strong light to catch ridges before priming
  • Prime coat suited to a smooth finish so roller marks and joints don't flash later

Simple & stress-free

How it works

1

Assess the existing texture

We check what's on the wall now and whether it's better to remove it or skim coat directly over it to reach a smooth finish.

2

Build the surface up flat

Compound goes on in multiple thin, wide coats, sanded between each pass, until the surface reads as flat rather than just covered.

3

Check under raking light and prime

Before priming, the wall is checked under a work light at an angle, since that's what shows leftover ridges or dips that flat daylight can hide.

We can help

Problems we fix

  • Dated popcorn, knockdown, or heavy texture that a homeowner wants replaced with a flat, modern look
  • A room being renovated where the rest of the house already has smooth walls
  • Old texture that's cracking, sagging, or holding dust and stains
  • A ceiling texture that needs to come down before other work, like recessed lighting, can go in cleanly
  • Uneven walls where texture was originally used to hide poor drywall work, which a smooth finish can't hide

Good to know

Smooth Wall Refinishing — FAQ

Do you remove the old texture, or just cover it?

It depends on the texture and how well it's holding up. Loose or heavy texture is usually best removed first; a stable, thin texture can sometimes be skim coated over directly. We check before recommending either way.

Will a smooth wall show more flaws than a textured one?

It can. Texture hides a lot of small imperfections in the drywall underneath, so a smooth finish requires the surface underneath to actually be flat and even, not just covered.

What is a 'Level 5' finish, and do I need it?

Level 5 is a trade term for the highest standard of smooth drywall finish, with a thin skim coat over the whole surface. It's most worth it under bright light, large windows, or gloss paint, where flaws show the most.

How much drying time does this kind of job need?

Each coat needs to dry before the next one goes on and before sanding, so a full smooth-out is built in stages rather than done in one pass. Coastal humidity can add to that drying time.
