Painting & Drywall

ProfessionalSkim Coating

Some walls have been patched so many times that no single repair will blend in anymore — old texture, dents, and touch-ups show under the right light. Skim coating covers the entire surface in thin, even layers of compound instead of adding one more spot patch. It's also the step that turns a rough or textured wall into a clean base for paint, often the most practical fix once patches start outnumbering the good wall between them.

What you get

What’s included

  • An assessment of whether the wall needs a full skim coat or just a few more targeted patches
  • Thin, even coats of joint compound applied across the entire wall or ceiling, not just the damaged spots
  • Sanding between coats to keep the surface flat instead of building up ridges
  • Blending the skim coat into adjoining walls, corners, and trim so there's no visible edge
  • A smooth, paint-ready surface, or a texture applied on top if you want to match an adjoining room
  • Primer over the finished compound so it doesn't flash unevenly under paint

Simple & stress-free

How it works

1

Assess the wall

We check how uneven the surface really is and whether a full skim coat is the right call, or if the wall just needs a handful of larger patches instead.

2

Apply and level the compound

Joint compound goes on in thin, wide passes across the whole surface, with sanding between coats so the wall builds up flat instead of wavy.

3

Finish the edges and prime

The skim coat is feathered into corners and trim so there's no ridge where it ends, then primed evenly so the surface takes paint the same way across the whole wall.

We can help

Problems we fix

  • A wall with so many old patches that they've started to show as a patchwork instead of blending in
  • Heavily textured walls or ceilings that need to be smoothed out for a modern, flat look
  • Wavy or uneven drywall from a rushed original installation
  • Old repairs or water stains that telegraph through paint no matter how many times it's repainted
  • A wall that looks fine up close but shows every flaw under raking light from a window or lamp

Skim Coating — FAQ

How is skim coating different from just patching more spots?

Patching fixes one area at a time, and each new patch can end up a slightly different texture than the last. Skim coating recoats the entire wall in one continuous layer, so there's no seam between old repairs and new.

Does skim coating work over textured walls?

Yes. A skim coat is often exactly how a textured wall gets converted to smooth — the compound fills the texture pattern and builds a flat surface on top of it.

How long does the compound need to dry before painting?

Compound needs to fully dry between coats and before priming, and Charleston's humidity can slow that down. We build drying time into the schedule rather than sand or paint over compound that's still damp underneath.

Will the skim-coated wall look different from the rest of the room?

Once it's primed and painted, a properly feathered skim coat blends into the surrounding wall. If only one wall in a room is coated, we make sure the edges taper out instead of stopping at a hard line.
