ProfessionalHose Bib Winterization
An outdoor faucet left with water in it will freeze and crack the body or the connecting pipe inside the wall once temperatures drop far enough. We drain and close the outdoor faucets and the interior shutoffs before the first hard freeze so you aren't dealing with a burst pipe in spring.

How it works
Close the interior shutoffs
We find each indoor shutoff valve corresponding to an outdoor faucet — typically in the basement or a mechanical closet — and close them.
Drain the outdoor faucets
We open each outdoor spigot and let it drain fully, then leave it in the open position so any remaining water can escape.
Insulate the exterior
We fit insulated foam covers over each outdoor faucet to protect against radiant cold and provide a final layer of protection.

Problems we fix
- Garden hose left attached, preventing the interior shutoff from draining the line
- Outdoor faucets that don't have interior shutoffs — a common situation in older construction

Hose Bib Winterization — FAQ
Do frost-free hose bibs need to be winterized?
Frost-free bibs drain automatically when you turn them off — but only if no hose is attached. A connected hose holds water in the stem. Always disconnect hoses before freezing weather, regardless of faucet type.
What if there's no interior shutoff for my outdoor faucet?
Some older homes lack individual shutoffs for exterior spigots. We can identify this situation and advise on adding one, or we rely on the main shutoff with proper drainage.
When should I do this?
Before the first night forecast to drop below 28–32°F. In most climates this falls in mid-autumn, but the exact timing depends on your local weather pattern.
