How it works

1

Prep the surface

We scrape loose paint, sand feather edges smooth, and caulk any gaps so the new paint has a solid, uniform surface to bond to.

2

Prime exposed areas

We apply exterior primer to any bare wood, metal, or filled spots so the finish coat adheres and won't peel again quickly.

3

Match and apply color

We brush on the finish coat, matching the existing sheen and color, and blend the edges into the surrounding painted surface.

We can help

Problems we fix

  • Touch-ups that look patchy because the paint sheen or batch doesn't match
  • Paint peeling again quickly when bare wood wasn't primed before the finish coat
  • Chalky, faded surfaces that don't hold new paint without cleaning and primer
  • Gaps along trim that allowed moisture in and started the peeling in the first place

Exterior Touch-up Painting — FAQ

How well will touch-ups match if I don't have the original paint?

A paint store can color-match from a small chip. The match is usually very close but may not be perfect on heavily faded surfaces that have changed in color over time.

Can you touch up painted metal surfaces like railings or shutters?

Yes. Metal needs rust treatment and a bonding primer first, then it takes paint well. We carry rust-inhibiting primer for iron and steel surfaces.

When is touch-up painting no longer enough?

When more than 20 to 30 percent of a surface is peeling or chalking heavily, a full paint job is more cost-effective and will look better than scattered touch-ups.
