How it works

1

Remove the old trap

We place a bucket under the assembly, loosen the slip-joint nuts by hand or with pliers, and remove the trap and any extension tubes.

2

Install the new trap

We fit the new P-trap components — adjusting extension tubes to bridge the tailpiece and the wall drain — and hand-tighten the slip-joint nuts with new washers.

3

Test for leaks

We run hot and cold water for several minutes, watching every joint, then snug any connection that shows a drip.

Problems we fix

  • Chrome brass traps on older sinks that have corroded through and drip continuously
  • Trap that has sagged and lost its water seal due to a loose slip joint
  • Incorrect trap height — the outlet is too high or too low to connect to the wall drain
  • Sewer gas smell from a trap that dried out during a long vacancy

Sink Trap (P-Trap) Replacement in Charleston — FAQ

Why does my sink smell even though it drains fine?

If the P-trap has lost its water seal — either from a slow leak or from the sink sitting unused — sewer gas can come up through the drain. Running water fills the trap again and eliminates the smell.

Can you use chrome traps in a kitchen, or do you need PVC?

Both work. Chrome or brass traps are preferred for exposed bathroom sinks where aesthetics matter. PVC or ABS is fine in kitchen cabinets and anywhere the trap is hidden. We install whichever suits the location.

Is P-trap replacement a messy job?

Slightly — there's always residual water in the trap. We keep a bucket and towels handy and leave the area dry when we're done.

Sink Trap (P-Trap) Replacement across Charleston

Charleston's humid subtropical climate, salt air and active storm season are tough on homes — swollen doors, rusting hardware, mildew-prone caulk and storm-loosened trim are all common. Downtown's historic houses add original plaster walls and tight, detailed millwork, while West Ashley and the islands bring newer builds with their own quirks. Our pros are comfortable with both.
