  • Clean up and remove all masking

How it works

1

Prep and border

We sand the wall smooth, apply a primer coat for adhesion, and tape any borders for a clean, framed panel look if desired.

2

Apply chalkboard paint

We roll on two to three smooth coats of chalkboard paint, allowing each to dry fully before the next for even coverage without streaks.

3

Season the surface

Once fully cured, we season the new chalkboard by rubbing the entire surface with chalk and erasing it, preventing ghost marks from the first real use.

Problems we fix

  • Ghosting on the board from the first use because the surface wasn't seasoned before writing
  • Streaky coverage from applying chalkboard paint too quickly over a porous, unprimed surface
  • Chalk that won't erase cleanly because the surface was used before the paint fully cured
  • Rough texture that makes writing feel scratchy due to skipping the surface prep step

Chalkboard Paint Application in Charleston — FAQ

Do you have to season a chalkboard wall before using it?

Yes. Seasoning means rubbing the whole surface with the side of a piece of chalk, then erasing it before writing anything. This fills the microscopic pores and prevents ghost marks that would otherwise be permanent.

Can chalkboard paint go over any color?

Chalkboard paint is typically dark gray or black. It covers most colors in two to three coats over primer. Very dark underlying colors may require an extra coat for even density.

Can the chalkboard section be painted over if we change our minds later?

Yes. Chalkboard paint accepts regular wall paint over it once it's been cleaned and lightly scuffed. A coat of primer first makes the transition to a regular wall color much easier.

Chalkboard Paint Application across Charleston

Charleston's humid subtropical climate, salt air and active storm season are tough on homes — swollen doors, rusting hardware, mildew-prone caulk and storm-loosened trim are all common. Downtown's historic houses add original plaster walls and tight, detailed millwork, while West Ashley and the islands bring newer builds with their own quirks. Our pros are comfortable with both.
